The Port Townsend Brewing Company is now serving wine by the glass.
Unwind at the cozy Lee Side Tasting Room with a pint of your favorite beer or a glass of wine.
We have a variety of delicious wines including two house wines (a Chardonnay and a Cabernet) as well as premium Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Merlot and a Cabernet Sauvignon.
For many families, single moms and “dads on duty”, the brewery had become somewhat of a utopia and garden paradise to enjoy a pint, a soda, and a bowl of peanuts with their children. This has been our vision from the start of Port Townsend Brewing Co. and we had hoped it would continue.
A Change Without Warning
Unfortunately the Washington State Liquor Control Board decided on Thursday August 17th, the day of our opening of the new tasting room, to inform us that we could no longer allow minors to enter the brewery at all. This came as a big shock to us and of course to our customers. After submitting our plans to the WSLCB in February it wasn’t until the day of opening that they informed us of their discretionary change. The added beer garden space and the added tasting room was the trigger for this change.
As many of us, even in the business, have trouble deciphering the finer points of the liquor laws, we will attempt to let you all know why this event occurred.
We were given a microbrewery license in the year 1997. With a microbrewery license we are allowed a “tasting room”. Wineries are also afforded the same consideration and it is left to the WSLCB agents’ “discretion & interpretation” of the law whether or not they remain a “tasting room” or a definite “drinking establishment”. This does not mean that we as a microbrewery or winery have taken out a new license; this means that the WSLCB deemed us a “drinking establishment” and therefore banned minors from our place of business.
Last Friday when we had to enforce this for the first time, we were very hurt by some of our local customers who insinuated that we had in some way brought this on ourselves and that we were glad that we didn’t have to allow kids anymore. To the contrary, we never in the nine years of being open, ever “had to” allow kids in our brewery. That was our choice. Many people have asked us why don’t you serve wine? The reason for that was that we could not have kids in the brewery if we served wine unless we had a kitchen that served food. With just beer and no food they would allow it, until now. With the major expansion of our garden and the new tasting room, the discretion and interpretation of our laws by the WSLCB was the deciding factor.
A Recurring Issue
Three years ago, without warning, the WSLCB decided that we could no longer have minors. After 5 years of not changing anything, they just “at their discretion & interpretation of the law decided that they could do this. No one had ever visited the brewery nor evaluated our record, or hours of business, which included closing at 7pm. We fought this for five months with many letters and phone calls on our part. Twenty of our customers who brought their children to the brewery wrote letters to the Liquor Board telling them of their fine experience at the brewery with their kids. With compromises on the part of the WSLCB and on the part of Port Townsend Brewing Co. they did indeed allow us to continue allowing minors.
So, I encourage all of you parents who are upset with this recent change, to write to your legislators and the WSLCB and tell them your views on this subject. The only way to change is through diligence and perseverance with your representatives and local government.

Port Townsend Brewing
Company is one of the few microbreweries that use "open fermentation" most breweries use fermenters that are cylindriconical and sealed.
These

fermenters doing it's work. Our fermenters are used dairy tanks and we can open the lid and actually see the yeast at work.
